Uber caps AI coding spend at $1,500 per employee per tool after burning its annual AI budget in 4 months
After encouraging staff to use AI 'as much as possible' and ranking usage on internal leaderboards, Uber blew through its annual AI budget in four months, according to its CTO. It then set a monthly cap per employee per agentic coding tool (e.g. Claude Code, Cursor), tracked on internal dashboards, with exceptions by permission.
The numbers (as reported)
| Monthly cap | $1,500 per employee, per tool |
|---|---|
| Time to exhaust annual AI budget | 4 months |
